The ongoing conflict in Bawku has claimed yet another life, raising the death toll to 26 since tensions reignited in late October 2024. Despite stringent measures such as a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew designed to quell violence, armed groups continue to operate with impunity, launching attacks that have exacerbated the crisis in the region.

The unrest has brought significant disruptions to everyday life in Bawku. Schools have been forced to shut down, businesses have ceased operations, and residents live in constant fear of further violence. The conflict has devastated the community, leaving many to question whether peace can ever be restored.

On Tuesday, November 12, violent clashes erupted in the Daduri suburb of Bawku, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving several others injured. The fighting involved a brutal gun battle that also destroyed two homes, with flames consuming what little safety residents had left. The incident marked another grim chapter in Bawku’s history, further intensifying the region's already dire security situation.

In the face of escalating violence, many residents have been left with no choice but to flee their homes. Onlookers recently witnessed six buses, under military escort, transporting families from Bawku to Bolgatanga in search of safety. The sight of these convoys underscored the gravity of the situation and the lengths to which people are going to protect their lives.

The conflict, which had shown signs of subsiding, flared up again following the controversial return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief whose presence has become a flashpoint for the renewed violence. Abagre had been in exile since February 2023 after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contentious installation as a chief in Nalerigu.

However, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, quashed the warrant, effectively allowing Abagre to return to Bawku. His arrival on October 26 reignited the long-standing chieftaincy dispute, sparking fresh violence almost immediately. Gunfire erupted shortly after his return, leaving two people dead and several others injured. The fragile peace that had been holding in the community quickly unraveled, giving way to fear and renewed hostilities.

The government has responded to the rising tensions by imposing a curfew in the area, explicitly citing Abagre’s presence as a significant risk to public safety. However, the measures have done little to restore calm, as the conflict continues to spiral out of control.

This latest chapter in the Bawku crisis is part of a much larger historical conflict. The dispute over the Bawku skin, a symbol of chiefly authority in the traditional area, dates back to 1931. The rivalry between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups has been marked by decades of strife, fueled by historical grievances, political interference, and ethnic tensions.

Over the years, the conflict has seen recurrent waves of violence, resulting in numerous deaths, injuries, and widespread destruction of property. The use of firearms in the area has only exacerbated the situation, as many residents feel compelled to arm themselves for self-defense. This surge in weapons has made it increasingly difficult for authorities to restore order and ensure the safety of the population.

The ongoing conflict has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters, with calls for the government to take decisive action to bring about lasting peace. Political analysts and community leaders have urged the authorities to address the root causes of the conflict, including the underlying issues of chieftaincy disputes, historical grievances, and the proliferation of arms in the area.

The impact of the violence extends far beyond the immediate loss of life and property. The social fabric of Bawku has been deeply fractured, with trust eroded between communities and families. The closure of schools has disrupted the education of countless children, while the economic impact of shuttered businesses has left many struggling to make ends meet.

As Bawku grapples with the ongoing crisis, there is a growing sense of urgency for all stakeholders to come together to find a lasting solution. Dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation efforts must take center stage if there is to be any hope of ending the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for decades.

The story of Bawku serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of unresolved conflicts. For the people of Bawku, the cost of the unrest is measured not just in lives lost but also in the untold suffering of those who remain. As the conflict continues to rage, the question on everyone’s mind is whether peace can ever be achieved in this troubled land.

The future of Bawku hangs in the balance, and the path forward will require courage, commitment, and a genuine willingness from all parties to prioritize peace over division. Until then, the people of Bawku remain trapped in a cycle of violence that has left their community scarred and their hopes for a brighter future dimmed.
