The ongoing conflict in Bawku, located in Ghana's Upper East Region, continues to escalate as violent clashes claim more lives. The death toll from renewed disturbances now stands at 26, with three more fatalities reported this week. Despite efforts by the government to restore calm, the situation remains dire.

Roots of the Conflict

The unrest in Bawku intensified following the controversial enskinment of Seidu Abagre as Bawku Naba in February 2023, a move that has since fueled divisions and sporadic violence in the area. In response to the growing insecurity, the Ministry of Interior imposed a curfew on October 28, restricting movement from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily. The decision came after an emergency National Security meeting, citing Mr. Abagre’s presence in the town as a significant threat to public safety.

According to the Ministry, the curfew was necessary under the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), to prevent further violence. However, the measure has failed to fully contain the crisis. Armed groups continue to engage in attacks, leaving homes destroyed and residents in fear.

The Impact of the Violence

The violence has had devastating effects on Bawku’s social and economic activities. Most schools and businesses remain closed, with many residents confined to their homes due to the constant threat of shootings. JoyNews correspondent Albert Sore noted that the area has normalized such disruptions, with education and commerce at a standstill.

In addition to the fatalities, several houses have been set ablaze, leaving families displaced and worsening the humanitarian situation.

Calls for Lasting Solutions

The conflict has drawn widespread attention, with analysts and residents urging the government to take decisive action. Some have called for the removal of the rival chief to restore calm, while others emphasize the need for a comprehensive security strategy to address the underlying causes of the violence.

Critics have also questioned the effectiveness of the government’s approach, highlighting that the continued unrest could have broader implications for regional stability.

Looking Ahead

As the violence persists, the focus remains on the government’s ability to de-escalate tensions and prevent further loss of life. The conflict in Bawku underscores the pressing need for dialogue and sustainable conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure lasting peace in the region.
