Former Ghanaian international and Asante Kotoko legend, Michael Osei, has passed away at the age of 53. Osei, a celebrated figure in Ghanaian football, died in London on Friday, November 15, 2024, after battling a prolonged illness. Known for his outstanding midfield skills, Osei’s football journey began at Okwawu United, where his talents quickly caught the attention of Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most prestigious clubs.


Osei’s exceptional performance at Kotoko led to an opportunity to play in Europe, where he competed for several German Bundesliga teams, including Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz 05. After hanging up his boots, Osei transitioned into coaching, where he made a significant impact on the local football scene in Ghana. His coaching career included managing several domestic clubs like New Edubiase United, Liberty Professionals, and notably, Asante Kotoko. In the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League, he guided Bibiani Gold Stars to an impressive fifth-place finish, highlighting his tactical skills and leadership.


In addition to his club achievements, Osei also played a vital role in developing Ghana’s national talent. He served as an assistant coach for the Black Meteors, Ghana’s U23 team, for five years, contributing to the growth of young players. Although he spent his later years abroad, his influence remained strong in the Ghanaian football community. Fans, colleagues, and the nation at large will fondly remember Osei for his contributions to the sport, both on and off the pitch.
