The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has successfully repatriated 13 Nigerian girls trafficked to Ghana, marking another significant step in combating human trafficking. This latest operation brings the total number of rescued victims since July 2024 to 163.
According to a statement released on November 15, 2024, by NiDCOM spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the girls, aged between 19 and 30, were deceived with promises of lucrative employment opportunities but instead faced exploitation under harsh conditions.
A Coordinated Effort Against Trafficking
The rescue operation was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Ghanaian Anti-Human Trafficking Police, Rescue Live Foundation International, NIDO Ghana, and NiDCOM. Temporary shelter was provided to the victims before their safe return to Nigeria, facilitated by Rescue Live Foundation International.
Callistus Elozieuwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Rescue Live Foundation International, praised the seamless international cooperation that enabled the operation. He underscored the need for sustained efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.
Commitment to Rehabilitation and Reintegration
The rescued girls hail from various states, including Ebonyi, Benue, Kaduna, and Rivers. They voluntarily surrendered after learning about previous rescue missions in Ghana, demonstrating a strong desire to escape their plight. Upon their return, they were met with promises of rehabilitation and reintegration support.
Valentine Uzo, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Ebonyi State, assured that measures were already in place to assist the victims in rebuilding their lives. Such efforts include psychological counseling, skill acquisition programs, and economic support aimed at empowering the survivors and preventing re-trafficking.
NiDCOM’s Renewed Focus
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed gratitude to the Nigerian First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for their roles in supporting the repatriation process. She reaffirmed NiDCOM's dedication to safeguarding Nigerians abroad, in line with President Bola Tinubu's "Renewed Hope Agenda." This agenda prioritizes combating human trafficking, protecting citizens' rights, and ensuring the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
Global Call to Action
The operation highlights the critical role of international partnerships in addressing human trafficking. While NiDCOM has achieved significant progress, Dabiri-Erewa called for sustained vigilance and collective action to eradicate this pervasive crime.
This rescue is a poignant reminder of the need for enhanced cross-border cooperation, public awareness, and robust legal frameworks to protect vulnerable populations from exploitation.
