Crisis in Bunkpurugu: Chieftaincy Dispute Sparks Violence
The town of Bunkpurugu in Ghana’s North East Region has been plunged into turmoil following a violent chieftaincy dispute. What began as a disagreement over the elevation of the Naniik sub-chief to paramountcy has escalated into deadly clashes, leaving one person dead, several injured, and hundreds displaced.
The dispute arose when some residents of Bimbagu, a neighboring community, opposed the decision of the Mamprugu Traditional Council and the National House of Chiefs to elevate Naniik Daana, the sub-chief of Naniik, to paramount status. Violence erupted when gunmen on motorcycles attacked the Naniik community, killing one person and injuring another.
