Shallipopi Reveals Artistes Ignored His Messages Before Fame
Nigerian artiste Shallipopi has shared his experience of being ignored by prominent musicians before he rose to fame. In a recent interview with Naija FM, the rising star revealed how he made numerous attempts to reach out to well-established artists, hoping to form connections that could help propel his career. However, his efforts were met with silence, a common experience for many up-and-coming artists.
Shallipopi explained that he often sent direct messages to influential artists, seeking advice, mentorship, or even collaboration. Yet, at the time, his messages went unanswered. Reflecting on those early days, he acknowledged that this was simply part of the journey for any artist trying to break into the industry. According to Shallipopi, he never took the lack of response personally, understanding that established artists were busy and had little reason to engage with an unknown artist.
“They don’t know you,” Shallipopi said. “It’s not personal – they have their own lives and work. If you’re unknown, it’s natural they won’t answer. But when you make it, that’s when people start entering your DMs.” His comments highlight the often-overlooked reality that success often changes the dynamics of relationships in the music industry. Once an artist gains recognition and begins to generate buzz, doors that were previously closed suddenly open, and former non-responses turn into invitations to collaborate.
Shallipopi pointed to his eventual collaboration with Afrobeats sensation Rema as a prime example of this shift. He revealed that he had initially reached out to Rema, who was already an established figure in the industry, hoping for a chance to work together. However, it wasn’t until Shallipopi’s music began to gain traction and attention that Rema finally responded to his message.
“When my music started gaining attention, Rema finally noticed and responded, encouraging me to keep going. We eventually connected in the studio, and that’s how Benin Boys was created,” Shallipopi explained. The track, which became a hit, marked a pivotal moment in Shallipopi’s career, cementing his place in the Nigerian music scene.
This story serves as a reminder of the perseverance needed to succeed in the competitive music industry. It also underscores the importance of patience and resilience, as success often comes after facing numerous rejections and challenges. For Shallipopi, his breakthrough came not through immediate recognition, but through continued effort and belief in his craft.
