The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned recent verbal attacks directed at former President John Agyekum Kufuor by members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The criticism follows a viral video featuring Dela Edem, a member of the NDC’s National Communications Team and an aide to former President John Mahama, making controversial remarks about Kufuor. Speaking on TV XYZ, Edem reportedly described Kufuor as “evil” and suggested that his health challenges were the result of a curse.

In response, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, issued a statement on November 16, calling the comments “despicable, shameful, and disgraceful.” He emphasized that such remarks against a revered statesman and former president were unprovoked and unacceptable.

“These unprovoked attacks on the revered statesman and former president are despicable, shameful, and disgraceful. Accordingly, the NPP condemns them in no uncertain terms,” Nana B stated.

The NPP further criticized NDC’s flagbearer, John Mahama, for his silence on the issue. The party urged Mahama to demonstrate leadership by publicly denouncing the remarks and taking disciplinary action against Edem. Additionally, they called for an official apology from Mahama to President Kufuor, emphasizing the need for mutual respect in Ghana’s political discourse.

The incident has sparked conversations about the tone of political communication in Ghana, with many calling for greater civility and respect among political actors. Kufuor, who served as Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009, is widely regarded as a unifying figure and one of the architects of Ghana’s democratic progress.

The NPP’s statement underscores the importance of protecting the dignity of individuals who have contributed to the nation’s development. Political commentators have pointed out that such attacks not only tarnish the reputation of those involved but also erode the spirit of constructive dialogue that is essential for democracy.

As Ghana prepares for the 2024 general elections, political parties are being urged to prioritize decorum and issue-based campaigning over personal attacks. The country’s democratic success has often been credited to its peaceful elections and respect for divergent views, values that many believe must be upheld by both political leaders and their followers.

This incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility political leaders have in shaping the narrative of public discourse. The call for an apology and disciplinary action signals the need for accountability, especially as the nation navigates an increasingly polarized political landscape.
