Super Typhoon Man-Yi Brings Destruction to Philippines, Sixth Storm in One Month

Super Typhoon Man-Yi, also known as Pepito, made landfall in the Philippines on Saturday night, bringing with it powerful winds and heavy rain ¹. The storm, which is the sixth to hit the country in just one month, has triggered over a million evacuations and damaged buildings in several areas.

The typhoon packed winds of 185 kph (115 mph) and made landfall in the town of Panganiban in Catanduanes province. Residents near coastal areas in Manila, the capital, were forced to evacuate due to fears of storm surges ¹. Amalia Santisas, one of those evacuated, shared her concerns, "We evacuated because every time there is a typhoon, the water rises in the nearby river... We have children with us and we are scared."

Despite the evacuations, no casualties have been reported, although the typhoon's strong winds damaged homes, schools, and commercial buildings in Catanduanes ¹. The state weather agency, PAGASA, has forecast that the typhoon will slightly weaken as it passes over mainland Luzon.

The highest storm alert has been declared for eastern parts of the islands of Polillo and Calaguas ¹. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.

The typhoon has disrupted daily life, with some areas experiencing power outages and communication disruptions. The Philippines' main island, Luzon, is expected to bear the brunt of the storm.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with humanitarian aid organizations on standby to provide assistance if needed.
