Sam Dzata George; the 'fearless" Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency, has broken his silence on the recent Supreme Court's rulings, and the ongoing "heated" debates on whether the Speaker Of Parliament should obey the court's decision or not.
In a recent interview, Hon. Sam George noted that, his side; the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament will not regard any recall of Parliament because they’re currently campaigning actively in their respective constituencies across the country ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections.
According to him, they will only respect any recall to parliament after December 11, when the elections are over; and all election related activities have been settled.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s program "KeyPoints", on November 16, the Ningo-Prampram MP added that, the House has been adjourned indefinitely by Speaker Alban Bagbin, due to the four vacant seats controversy, which has now been settled after the Supreme Court's verdict, but it will be an exercise in futility for Parliament to be recalled some few weeks to the general elections.
BACKGROUND:
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, recently declared four Parliamentary seats as vacant, but the Supreme Court has overturned this decision, ruling it as unconstitutional.
This dramatic turn of events occurred on November 12, 2024, when a seven-member panel, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, delivered a 5-2 majority decision in favor of the Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin.
The Supreme Court's ruling has sent shockwaves through Ghana's political landscape. The verdict effectively reversed the brief majority held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
The four seats in question were held by MPs who had decided to contest upcoming elections on different party tickets. With this ruling, those MPs may be allowed to return to Parliament, potentially altering the balance of power.
