Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has directed all NDC Members of Parliament (MPs) to boycott any emergency recall of Parliament. This announcement comes just three weeks before Ghana's general elections, amid growing political tension. Speaking to party supporters in the Ellembelle constituency of the Western Region, Asiedu Nketia dismissed the need for any emergency sitting of Parliament. He accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of planning to exploit such a recall for corrupt purposes. "Let no NDC MP set foot in Parliament. If they like, they can go and burn the sea. There's no work in Parliament that can be said to be an emergency" he said. He went on to allege, "They are trying to loot the country one last time with just three weeks to the election. We won't pay them any attention, not today, not tomorrow. Judges can make the rulings they want, but Parliament will follow its own laws."
Asiedu Nketia's directive follows a controversial Supreme Court ruling, which declared the Speaker of Parliament's decision to vacate four parliamentary seats as unconstitutional. The affected MPs had vacated their seats to contest the upcoming elections as either independent candidates or under the banner of different political parties. The NDC Chairman criticized the ruling, arguing that it oversteps the Court's powers and threatens Ghana's democracy. He framed the boycott as part of a larger effort to safeguard the integrity of Parliament and preserve democratic governance. "Parliament is the heart of democracy in Ghana. That's why every citizen who cares about this country must stand up to protect it. We've fought long and hard for a strong Parliament and for democracy, and we won't let one person Come along and weaken or undermine it" he stated.
Asiedu Nketia also rallied support for the NDC's parliamentary candidates in the upcoming elections, stressing the importance of securing a majority in Parliament to check potential authoritarian tendencies. He emphasized that a strong and independent legislature is crucial to maintaining democratic governance. With the general elections fast approaching, Asiedu Nketia's directive is expected to deepen the political divide, adding to the already charged atmosphere.
