Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on all eligible Ghanaians to actively participate in the upcoming 2024 general elections, stressing that voting is not only a civic duty but a powerful way to shape the nation's future. In a heartfelt appeal, Kufuor urged citizens to recognize the importance of their vote, warning that failing to participate in the election process could result in decisions being made on their behalf by others.
In a speech read for him at a public gathering in Accra, Kufuor stressed that voting gives everybody his or her right to determine how direction is taken for the country. He cited the situation whereby people do not vote, thereby ceding control to others who would eventually pursue the objectives less allied to their interests.
"The right to vote is a privilege that comes with great responsibility," Kufuor said. "If you do not vote, it is others who will make the decisions for you. They will determine your children's future and for generations to come."
The former president said a well-functioning democracy required an active citizenry. The former head of the state from 2001 to 2009 underscored that in the past, many people struggled for this right to vote. "When people had to fight for the right to vote, then they should not take the right to vote lightly.".
He also called upon the political parties and their supporters to advance a peaceful campaign as the seasons for election were near. Kufuor was underlining that no violence and factional politics should accompany the process, and the progress should be achieved unitedly.
With the 2024 polls looming, political observers forecast a keen competition. Kufuor's call for increased voter participation comes at a time when concerns about voter apathy and election integrity have been raised.
"Vote for the future you want to see," Kufuor concluded. "Your vote is your voice. Don't let others decide for you."
