Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed confidence in the potential of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, to transform Ghana’s economy if elected. Speaking to journalists on November 17, 2024, Kufuor highlighted Dr. Bawumia's strong economic credentials, emphasizing his contributions during a critical period of Ghana’s financial recovery under Kufuor’s administration.

Dr. Bawumia, then a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, played a key role in restoring stability to the national currency, working alongside Governor Dr. Paul Acquah. According to Kufuor, Dr. Bawumia’s analytical skills and strategic approach to economic policy were instrumental during this period of economic revitalization. These qualities, he believes, make him well-equipped to address Ghana’s current challenges.

“Given the global economic challenges and Ghana's unique circumstances, I am confident that Dr. Bawumia has the expertise and vision to accelerate Ghana’s development,” Kufuor stated. He further urged Ghanaians to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia, underscoring the need for a leader with proven experience in navigating economic complexities.

Dr. Bawumia has consistently emphasized his commitment to leveraging digitalization, innovation, and prudent economic management as tools to transform Ghana’s economy. His track record in spearheading digital initiatives such as the digitization of Ghana’s financial sector and introducing the Mobile Money Interoperability System reflects his capability to modernize and streamline governance for inclusive growth.

Kufuor’s endorsement comes at a crucial time as Ghana faces significant economic pressures, including high debt levels and inflation. Dr. Bawumia’s campaign promises have centered on creating sustainable economic policies that promote industrial growth, job creation, and improved living standards. Kufuor noted that divine guidance and national unity would be critical in ensuring the success of these plans.

The former president's call to action aligns with growing public discourse about leadership that can stabilize the economy and foster innovation. As Ghana approaches its general elections, Kufuor’s endorsement adds weight to Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, highlighting the need for experienced leadership to tackle pressing economic challenges.

Kufuor’s remarks reflect the NPP’s broader vision for sustained economic development and its belief in the transformative power of effective leadership. This endorsement may serve as a rallying point for voters seeking a leader with a track record of economic management and innovation
