SDP Rejects Ondo Election Results, Accuses INEC Of Fraud And Demands Annulment

In a dramatic turn of events following the recently concluded Ondo State governorship election, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing alleged irregularities and violations of electoral laws. The party has called for the immediate cancellation of the election, demanding justice and transparency.

Speaking at a press briefing in Akure, the SDP gubernatorial candidate and party leadership accused INEC of failing to conduct a free, fair, and credible election. The SDP highlighted numerous alleged instances of voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, and vote-buying during the election.

“INEC’s conduct of this election falls far below acceptable standards. The people of Ondo State deserve better than what transpired. The process was marred by violence, intimidation, and outright manipulation," said the SDP spokesperson.

The party further alleged that security operatives deployed for the election failed to provide adequate protection to voters and electoral officials, leaving room for chaos in several polling units.

The SDP has submitted a formal petition to INEC, detailing its grievances and requesting the cancellation of the election results. The party is also considering legal action to ensure that the people of Ondo State are not disenfranchised.

"Our democracy is at stake if we allow these practices to persist," the SDP gubernatorial candidate asserted. "The election does not reflect the will of the people, and we are calling on INEC to cancel the results and organize a fresh, credible election."

INEC, on its part, declared the election results valid, emphasizing that the process adhered to electoral guidelines. A representative of the commission stated, “While challenges are inevitable in any election, the results reflect the votes cast by the electorate.”

INEC has urged aggrieved parties to pursue their grievances through appropriate legal channels, reiterating its commitment to maintaining electoral integrity.

Political analysts have described the SDP’s rejection of the results as a test of Nigeria’s electoral system. They argue that the party’s grievances could prompt a thorough review of the conduct of elections in the country, particularly regarding the role of security agencies and the independence of electoral bodies.

"The SDP's stance highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in elections. It also underscores the need for reforms to ensure that every vote truly counts," said Dr. Oladimeji Adebayo, a political science lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University.

The aftermath of the Ondo State election has left the political landscape charged, with calls for reforms to address the recurring issues that plague the electoral process. While the SDP's rejection of the results signals deep dissatisfaction, the ultimate resolution may rest in the courts.
