Following the Supreme Court's decision on Tuesday, Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has extended "a hand of friendship" to members of the Cassiel Ato Forson led National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus. "The time has come for us to move beyond this episode and refocus our energies on our primary duty-serving the people of Ghana who elected us to represent their interests. Our nation faces pressing challenges that require our united attention and collaborative effort," stated the Effutu constituency MP on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. The NDC Caucus previously claimed majority in Parliamnent after Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant. This declaration followed announcements from four MPs who planned to contest the December 7 election under different political banners.

The Speaker's declaration was contested in the Supreme Court by Afenyo-Markin, and on Tuesday the Court upheld the appeal with a 5-2 majority decision, delivered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. "This decision by the Supreme Court should not be viewed as a win for one side or a loss for another," Afenyo-Markin emphasized. "Instead, it marks a triumph for our constitutional democracy and the rule of law. It reaffirms the principle that in our Republic, all institutions, regardless of stature, must operate within the bounds of our Constitution" "|urge all members of Parliament to see this as an opportunity for renewal. Let us embrace our roles with fresh vigor and work together in a spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual respect. The clarification provided by the Supreme Court should serve as a foundation for more effective parliamentary proceedings," he added.

I urge all members of Parliament to see this as an opportunity for renewal. Let us embrace our roles with fresh vigor and work together in a spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual respect. The clarification provided by the Supreme Court should serve as a foundation for more effective parliamentary proceedings,” he added.
