Akwesi Agyeman, a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, has voiced strong support for head coach Otto Addo amid calls for his removal. This comes after the Ghanaian national team’s disappointing campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. For the first time in 21 years, the Black Stars will miss out on AFCON, having failed to advance after a crucial 1-1 draw against Angola. With three draws and two losses in five games, the team currently sits in 4th place in Group F with only three points. The underwhelming performance has triggered criticism from fans and some analysts who question whether Addo is the right man to guide the team to future success. However, Agyeman cautions against a quick dismissal, arguing that the team needs continuity, especially given the number of coaching changes in recent years.
In his defense of Addo, Agyeman pointed out that the Ghanaian national team has cycled through numerous coaches, leading to a lack of stability. He mentioned that the team had seen several coaches, including Kwasi Appiah, CK Akonnor, Milovan Rajevac, and Chris Hughton, take on the coaching role in a short span of time. This frequent rotation, he argued, disrupts long-term planning and prevents the development of a cohesive strategy. According to Agyeman, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had a long-term vision in mind when they appointed Addo, citing his ability to bring a strategic approach to the team’s growth. He emphasized that Addo was initially hired due to his potential to guide the national squad with a future-oriented mindset. Even though Addo had to temporarily leave the role after the World Cup due to commitments with Borussia Dortmund, Agyeman insists that he remains the right person for the job given his alignment with the GFA’s goals.
As Ghana gears up for a new chapter, Agyeman remains adamant that keeping Addo in place is crucial, especially as the team faces important World Cup qualifiers. Despite the setback of missing the AFCON, Agyeman believes that firing Addo now would only serve to undermine the national team's momentum. He stressed that consistency is essential in football and that results cannot always be the sole metric for success in a rebuilding phase. With two vital matches against Chad on the horizon, Agyeman contends that it is crucial to retain stability in leadership to keep Ghana’s World Cup ambitions on track. The final AFCON group stage match against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium represents a chance for the team to regroup and look forward. According to Agyeman, decisions about leadership should not be made in haste following a single tournament’s disappointment. Instead, the focus should remain on fostering long-term success, building team unity, and creating a strong foundation for future competitions.
