The anticipation for the 2024 African Player of the Year award reached a new height as CAF (Confederation of African Football) unveiled the shortlist of five standout players. Among them are Nigeria's Ademola Lookman and South Africa's Ronwen Williams, two athletes who have made an indelible mark in their respective roles this past year.

Ademola Lookman, who has been in stellar form, is considered a frontrunner for the award. The Nigerian striker lit up European football last season with Atalanta, where his crowning achievement was scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, securing a 3-0 victory for his team. His consistent goal-scoring prowess and significant contribution to Atalanta’s European success have set him apart as a key figure on the shortlist.

Ronwen Williams, the South African goalkeeper, also earned his place among the best in Africa for his exceptional performances on the international stage and at club level. Williams has been a cornerstone for both Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns, showcasing his leadership and sharp reflexes. His reliability in goal has been crucial for South Africa's qualification for major tournaments and for Sundowns' continued dominance in domestic and continental competitions. His nomination underscores the importance of goalkeepers and defensive players in football, often overshadowed by the glory of goal-scorers.

Joining Lookman and Williams on the list is Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, who continues to impress with his dynamic performances as a defender. Known for his speed and offensive contributions from the backline, Hakimi has been instrumental for both his national team and Paris Saint-Germain. His solid displays at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and his consistent form in European club competitions have positioned him as one of the continent’s most formidable talents.

Ivory Coast's Simon Adingra and Guinea’s prolific striker Serhou Guirassy round out the list of nominees. Adingra’s speed and skill on the wings have earned him recognition, while Guirassy has proven to be a potent attacking force, scoring consistently in both domestic and international matches. Their inclusion highlights the broad spectrum of African talent, from creative wingers to clinical finishers.

The current holder of the prestigious award, Victor Osimhen, set the bar high in 2023 after leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in decades and dazzling with his powerful displays in the Champions League. Osimhen’s recognition last year showcased the rising influence of Nigerian players on the global stage. However, since then, Osimhen has been loaned to Galatasaray, leaving room for a new star to claim the spotlight.

The upcoming award ceremony, scheduled for December 16 in Marrakesh, Morocco, will celebrate the achievements of African footballers across multiple categories. This prestigious event will not only honor the Player of the Year but also recognize outstanding performances in women’s football, young talents, and coaches who have made significant contributions to the sport.

The competition is stiff, with each nominee bringing a unique set of skills and accomplishments. Fans and pundits alike eagerly await to see whether Lookman’s prolific scoring, Williams' leadership and goalkeeping excellence, or one of the other nominees’ contributions will earn the title of Africa’s best footballer in 2024. The stage is set for an evening that will celebrate the vibrancy and talent of African football, showcasing why the continent remains a wellspring of world-class talent.
