Otto Addo Stands Firm Amid Resignation Calls After AFCON Qualifying Failure
Ghana’s Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, has declared he will not resign despite the national team’s disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Addo faced mounting criticism after Ghana ended their qualifying campaign at the bottom of Group F, securing only three points in six matches.
Addressing the media following a 2-1 loss to Niger in their final qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, Addo responded to calls for him to step down. “I’m not the person who can resign,” he stated. “If I had done this, I would never have become a player or a coach.”
Ghana’s poor performance throughout the campaign has placed the team under intense scrutiny. The Black Stars failed to win a single match, scoring only three goals while conceding nine. Despite a debut goal from Jerry Afriyie in the match against Niger, defensive lapses and a missed penalty by Mohammed Kudus in added time sealed their fate.
The failure has sparked public outrage, with fans and analysts questioning the team's direction under Addo's leadership. However, Addo remains defiant, insisting that stepping down is not the solution.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is set to meet in the coming days to review the team’s performance and decide on the future of the coaching staff. The meeting will address critical issues surrounding the team’s management and plans for rebuilding after this setback.
In the meantime, Addo’s position remains uncertain, with both supporters and critics waiting for the GFA’s verdict on whether the coach will retain his role or if a new leadership approach will be adopted.
The Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 marks a low point in the team’s history, amplifying calls for structural reforms within Ghanaian football to restore its former glory.
