Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has voiced disappointment with Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei Opare’s dismissal of allegations surrounding the distribution of repackaged expired rice to Senior High Schools. The controversy, which has sparked national concern, involves accusations that expired rice was repackaged and supplied to schools through the National Food Buffer Stock Company Limited (NAFCO).
Madam Osei Opare, in her comments, described the claims as “propaganda” and argued that such issues have no place in the education sector. “You know it is not true, so let us focus on things that move this country forward… propaganda and rumor-mongering have no place in education,” she said.
Speaking on Joy FM’s *Newsnight* on November 18, Ablakwa criticized the Chief of Staff’s approach, stating that dismissing the allegations without proper investigation undermines the gravity of the matter. “I am disappointed in the Chief of Staff. This is an enormous woman I have a lot of respect for, but it appears she is learning from her boss. She also wants to be a clearing agent,” Ablakwa remarked.
He argued that as Chief of Staff, Madam Osei Opare should have taken proactive measures by summoning relevant authorities, including the Minister of Education, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and the NAFCO Board, to thoroughly investigate the claims. Ablakwa emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of parents and students who might be affected by the alleged distribution.
“What work did she do as Chief of Staff? Someone who must coordinate all these institutions that have let us down… And as a mother, all you do is say this is untrue, this is propaganda without any verification. I am totally appalled, disgusted, and disappointed in Madam Frema Osei Opare for this conduct,” Ablakwa said.
The allegations have raised questions about accountability and oversight in the distribution of food supplies to educational institutions. Critics argue that dismissing such concerns without evidence sends the wrong message and may erode public trust in leadership.
The scandal remains a significant talking point, with calls for comprehensive investigations to determine the veracity of the claims and ensure the safety and well-being of students.
