The Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV, has raised serious concerns about the increasing prevalence of tribalism, political partisanship, and lawlessness in Ghana, which he believes are undermining the nation’s progress. Speaking at the 2024 Asogli Te Za Grand Durbar in Ho, he criticized leaders for prioritizing political and personal gains over national unity and development.

"While real leaders are committed to uniting their people, here in our country, everything is tribalistic or politicized," Togbe Afede remarked, referencing recent partisan reactions to the destruction caused by tidal waves in the southern Volta region.

He expressed dismay at the pervasive dishonesty in leadership, which he claims has bred corruption and lawlessness, thereby stalling the country’s growth. “Greed and corruption are the biggest obstacles to our development. Those at the helm of affairs have replaced our colonial masters in the reckless scramble for national resources,” he added.

The traditional leader lamented how democracy in Ghana has been reduced to a system benefiting only a select few. “Our democracy has become an enterprise that benefits a few. Ghana is like an orphan child raped by the very people mandated to take care of her,” Togbe Afede said, describing corrupt officials as “termites eating at the foundations of our development.”

He criticized many political officeholders as "wolves in sheepskin," who seek power for selfish purposes rather than genuine service. However, he expressed optimism that, through divine intervention, Ghanaians would eventually identify and expose such leaders.

Highlighting the consequences of lawlessness and indiscipline, Togbe Afede noted the rise in armed robbery, mob violence, and other crimes. He cited several tragic incidents, including the lynching of a young prison officer in Kasoa and the murder of students in Keta and Accra, which he attributed to poverty and systemic societal failures.

Togbe Afede also recounted his own experience of public vilification, particularly after he returned ex-gratia payments he deemed undeserved. He accused the Council of State Secretariat of complicity in spreading false narratives about his service, including claims that he received transport allowances from Ho despite residing in Accra.

Calling for a return to honesty and accountability, Togbe Afede urged leaders to tackle these flaws seriously, warning that Ghana's ability to attract foreign investment would suffer if such issues persist. "Investors want to feel welcomed in places where the law works and where discipline prevails," he emphasized.

He concluded by praising Ghanaians for their patience, which has preserved the country’s stability under the Fourth Republic, but cautioned that the current trajectory threatens the nation’s long-term development.
