One Dead, Several Injured in Accident on Bolga-Bawku Highway
Tragedy struck on the Bolgatanga-Bawku highway on Monday evening, claiming the life of one individual and leaving several others injured. The incident occurred near Bazua, before the MAXX Empire area in the Binduri District, at approximately 5:30 PM.
According to eyewitnesses, a mini-bus transporting seven passengers from Bawku to Bolgatanga veered off the road after a young girl on a bicycle suddenly crossed its path. The driver of the vehicle, in an attempt to avoid hitting the girl, lost control of the bus, leading to the fatal crash. Unfortunately, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Residents in the area acted swiftly, rushing to the scene to assist the victims. The injured were transported to the Bazua Health Center for urgent medical attention. At the time of reporting, all injured passengers were receiving treatment, with healthcare workers doing their best to stabilize their conditions.
The Bolga-Bawku highway is a critical route in the Upper East Region, but it has increasingly become notorious for accidents due to the narrow nature of the road, poor visibility in some stretches, and the lack of adequate pedestrian crossings. Monday’s accident serves as another grim reminder of the need for stricter road safety measures to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
Authorities are yet to provide an official statement on the incident. However, community members have called for better enforcement of traffic regulations, road expansions, and increased safety campaigns to protect both motorists and pedestrians.
The tragic loss of the driver has left his family and the community in mourning, while the injured continue to battle for recovery. Road users are being urged to exercise caution, especially as the festive season approaches, to avoid further calamities on this busy highway.
SMART Media Upper East will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
