The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, is facing mounting criticism following what has been described as Ghana football’s worst performance in recent years. Veteran sports journalist Veronica Commey has called for his resignation, citing a period marked by unfulfilled promises, a lack of accountability, and declining performances from the national teams.

Under Okraku’s leadership, Ghanaian football has struggled to maintain its once-proud reputation. The Black Stars, once a force on the African continent, have failed to inspire confidence. Their disappointing run in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers is only the latest example of their struggles, with the team exiting the competition without a single victory.

Commey, who has followed Ghanaian football closely for years, expressed her frustration in a public statement, describing the past five years as the "most dreadful" era for the sport in the country. "You’ve supervised the worst spell of Ghana football in five years. It is time to step down," she stated emphatically.

A History of Failures

Okraku’s tenure has been characterized by numerous setbacks. The national teams, including the senior Black Stars and the junior sides, have failed to secure major wins on the international stage. Despite his promises to revive local football, the domestic leagues have also struggled to attract fans and sponsorships.

Commey’s criticism comes in the wake of the Black Stars’ 2-1 loss to Niger in their final AFCON qualifier. The defeat marked yet another low point for a team that once reached the pinnacle of African football. Many Ghanaians have expressed discontent, questioning the leadership and strategies of the GFA under Okraku’s watch.

Fans Demand Accountability

The calls for Okraku’s resignation go beyond Commey. Many football enthusiasts and analysts believe that the GFA’s leadership has failed to provide a clear vision for the future. Critics argue that the administration’s focus on image-building rather than addressing fundamental issues has further deepened the sport’s problems.

While Okraku has overseen some positive initiatives, such as efforts to promote grassroots football, these have been overshadowed by the failures at the national level. The Black Stars’ lack of success has particularly angered fans, with some blaming poor coaching appointments, inadequate preparation, and a lack of investment in player development.

A Turning Point for Ghana Football?

As pressure mounts, the question remains: will Kurt Okraku heed the calls to step down? For many, his departure would signal the beginning of a new era, one where accountability and a fresh vision could restore Ghana’s footballing glory.
