Former Trade Minister and independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen has openly criticized ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate. Kyerematen, who recently left the NPP, expressed disappointment in Kufuor’s decision, suggesting it tarnishes the statesman’s political legacy.

Kyerematen voiced his concerns during an interview with Oyerepa TV on November 18, 2024. He lamented the impact of Kufuor’s actions, stating, “What he has done has created a big blot on his political career. You see how people are speaking against him. For someone with a distinguished career in politics and everyone respects you, how do you now involve yourself in such matters?”

Kufuor, known for his pivotal role in Ghana’s political history, endorsed Dr. Bawumia during a recent public appearance, asserting that the NPP candidate has the skills to transform Ghana’s economy. Kufuor highlighted Bawumia’s contributions to economic policy during his tenure as Vice President and his earlier role at the Bank of Ghana.

Kyerematen’s Perspective

Kyerematen, a long-time member of the NPP before resigning to pursue an independent presidential bid, feels betrayed by Kufuor’s endorsement. He questioned why the former president, who previously supported him, would now back Bawumia. “It was okay for President Kufuor to root for me in the past, but it’s a sin for him to support someone else now?” he remarked.

The independent candidate also expressed concern that Kufuor’s endorsement has led to public disrespect towards the elder statesman. Kyerematen advised Kufuor to remain neutral, emphasizing that such actions could harm his reputation.

Kufuor’s Defense

Meanwhile, Kufuor has maintained his support for the NPP and its flagbearer, citing loyalty to the party as his motivation. Speaking to journalists on November 17, he said, “The NPP has a track record of economic transformation, and I believe Dr. Bawumia has the potential to accelerate Ghana’s development.”

His endorsement has sparked mixed reactions. While some applaud his dedication to the party, others, including Kyerematen, view it as unnecessary interference in Ghana’s already polarized political landscape.

Public Reactions

Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), also weighed in, defending Kufuor’s right to campaign for his party. “You are no longer an NPP member, so what is your problem?” Koku asked Kyerematen on social media, questioning the rationale behind the criticism.

Kyerematen’s remarks come amid a heated election season, with various stakeholders jostling for political advantage. Whether Kufuor’s endorsement significantly influences voters remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly reignited conversations about party loyalty and statesmanship in Ghanaian politics.
