President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the much-anticipated Flower Pot Interchange today, November 19, 2024. This modern infrastructure is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion between the north and south sections of the Tema Motorway, improving connectivity and enhancing the daily lives of residents in the affected areas.

The interchange is strategically designed to facilitate smoother movement between prominent locations such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema. Once operational, it is anticipated to reduce travel times and enhance accessibility for commuters.

Project Features

The Flower Pot Interchange boasts several cutting-edge features. It includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, ensuring durability and ease of travel. Additionally, the project features a 140-meter ramp providing access from Shiashie to the viaduct towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the Motorway towards Tema.

A new road has been constructed through the old tunnel at East Legon, providing an alternate route for smoother travel. The project also includes a redesigned Flower Pot roundabout and its approaches, with enhanced pedestrian walkways on both sides of the flyover. Furthermore, essential road furniture, such as streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals, have been incorporated to ensure safety and efficiency.

Timeline and Funding

Work on the interchange commenced on March 7, 2017. The project was executed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Ltd., with Deoke Consult Ltd. serving as the consultant. The entire initiative was completed over a 93-month period and funded through a collaborative effort between the African Export-Import (Afrexim) Bank and the Government of Ghana.

Transforming Accra’s Transport Network

The commissioning of the Flower Pot Interchange marks another milestone in the government's efforts to modernize Ghana’s transport infrastructure. By addressing longstanding traffic bottlenecks in the city, the project aligns with the administration's vision of fostering economic growth and improving urban living conditions.

Residents and commuters alike have expressed optimism about the benefits this project will bring. As President Akufo-Addo officially opens the interchange today, it is expected to usher in a new era of enhanced mobility and urban development in Accra

This initiative is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to infrastructure development, positioning the country as a model for modern urban planning in Africa.
