The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, of leading a plot to rig the upcoming December 7 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). At a press conference on November 19, NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi claimed that Opoku is involved in orchestrating several illegal actions, including ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, and deploying NPP operatives disguised as military personnel to disrupt the electoral process. The NDC alleges that these operatives are being trained at the Asutsuare Military Camp and other undisclosed locations, with Opoku’s residence in Kumasi being used as a storage facility for weapons, military apparel, and counterfeit election materials intended to influence the results.

Gyamfi also drew attention to Opoku’s controversial past, particularly his involvement in the violent incidents during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wugon bye-election. At that time, Opoku, who was serving as the Director of Operations at the National Security Secretariat, allegedly coordinated attacks on civilians by NPP-aligned thugs. The Emile Short Commission, which investigated the violence, found Opoku responsible for the events but his promotion to Brigadier-General by President Akufo-Addo followed. Gyamfi contended that this promotion emboldened Opoku, who now, as part of his new role, is leading the election-rigging efforts, particularly in the Ashanti region, to ensure an NPP victory. The NDC believes that the plot will begin with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2.

In light of these allegations, the NDC is calling for Opoku’s immediate removal from his post, citing his violent history and his involvement in undermining the democratic process. The party also vowed to monitor his actions closely, promising that any attempts to manipulate the election will be thwarted. Gyamfi urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate Opoku’s activities and hold him accountable for his actions. With the election just days away, the NDC remains confident of a victory for its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. The party emphasizes that Ghanaians must choose a leader with integrity and vision over the NPP’s alleged corrupt practices. The NDC also reiterated its commitment to peace and urged all Ghanaians to condemn any efforts to subvert the will of the people.
