December 5, 2020, marked a disturbing day in Ogun State, Nigeria, as a soldier brutally assaulted a young lady for allegedly dressing " indecently. " The incident, which occurred around 9: 47 am at Oju- Ore in the Ota area, has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns about military brutality in the country.
According to eyewitnesses, the soldier, whose identity remains unknown, was riding in a commercial bus when he suddenly alighted and attacked the lady, who was walking on the road wearing shorts and a white knitted cover- up. Without provocation, the soldier slapped the lady repeatedly, pulling her back by her braided hair when she attempted to flee.
The assault only ended when passersby intervened, begging the soldier to release the lady. The incident was captured on video, showing the soldier violently yanking off the lady' s blouse and attempting to remove her bra before being stopped.
This disturbing incident echoes a similar event in Ibadan, Oyo State, last month, where soldiers deployed to curb #EndSARS protests were caught on camera flogging a woman for " indecent dressing. " Rights group Amnesty International has consistently accused the Nigerian military of committing various human rights abuses, including whipping, forced haircuts, and extrajudicial killings.
The Nigerian Army' s 81 Division spokesperson, Major Olaniyi Osoba, was unreachable for comment, as his phone line was switched off at the time of filing the report.
This incident raises critical questions about the military' s role in maintaining law and order, particularly regarding their treatment of civilians. The Nigerian government must take concrete steps to address these recurring incidents of military brutality and ensure accountability within the armed forces.

As the country grapples with issues of insecurity, economic instability, and social injustice, incidents like these undermine trust in institutions and perpetuate a culture of violence and impunity. It is essential to promote a culture of respect for human rights and dignity, particularly among those sworn to protect the nation.
The victim' s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased awareness and advocacy against all forms of violence and discrimination. The Nigerian people demand justice, accountability, and an end to military brutality.
