The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made explosive allegations against President Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of plotting to rig the 2024 general elections in the Ashanti Region. According to the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the President has tasked Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, with carrying out a sophisticated election-rigging scheme to secure victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking at a press conference on November 19, 2024, Gyamfi alleged that Brigadier General Opoku’s recent promotion to his current role was part of a broader strategy to manipulate the electoral process. He further claimed that instead of being sanctioned for his controversial role in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, Opoku has been rewarded with a powerful position and promised an even greater one if the NPP retains power.
“In his current position, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been mandated by Akufo-Addo to implement a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region,” Gyamfi said. He elaborated on alleged tactics such as ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes and pink sheets, and other clandestine activities.
Claims of Thuggery and Violence
The NDC further alleged that Brigadier General Opoku is overseeing the training of NPP-affiliated thugs at the Asutsuare military camp. According to Gyamfi, these individuals are being equipped with military uniforms and will allegedly be deployed to intimidate NDC agents, supporters, and civilians on election day.
“Brigadier General Opoku plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents and innocent civilians,” Gyamfi claimed. He also alleged that Opoku had relocated his family to the United Kingdom as a precautionary measure, signaling his readiness to undertake the alleged scheme in exchange for a future promotion to Chief of Defence Staff.
Demands for Accountability
The NDC called for immediate action to prevent what they described as an attempt to undermine Ghana’s democratic processes. They urged civil society, international observers, and the Electoral Commission to scrutinize activities in the Ashanti Region, especially during the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2, 2024.
Government’s Response
As of now, there has been no official response from the government or the Ghana Armed Forces to the allegations. However, similar claims and counterclaims between the NDC and NPP have been a recurring feature of Ghana’s highly polarized political landscape.
With less than a month to the elections, these accusations are expected to heighten tensions and put a spotlight on electoral integrity, particularly in the Ashanti Region, a crucial stronghold for the NPP. All eyes will now be on the government, security agencies, and election observers to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
