The Black Stars of Ghana have failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years, leaving many fans disheartened. However, the team’s manager, Ameenu Shardow, has defended their efforts, claiming that their performances during the qualifiers were much better than the results suggested. Ghana finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points after a 1-1 draw against Angola and a 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium. Shardow expressed pride in the players, insisting that despite the outcome, their gameplay demonstrated potential and determination. He argued that the results were not a fair reflection of the team's efforts, stating that they often outperformed their opponents on the pitch.
Speaking on Happy FM, Shardow urged fans to set aside emotions and analyze the games objectively. He cited Ghana’s opening match against Angola as an example, questioning whether the team truly deserved to lose based on their performance. According to him, Ghana played well enough to dominate the group standings if performance, rather than results, was the key metric. "If you are factual and honest, you’ll see that the team deserved better outcomes. We delivered strong performances in almost every match, but the results did not align with what we showed on the field," he remarked. His defense of the Black Stars highlights his belief in the team’s talent and their ability to bounce back despite the disappointment of missing AFCON 2025.
In response to the team’s failure, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is set to meet and deliberate on the way forward. Fans and stakeholders are calling for accountability and meaningful changes in both the technical and administrative aspects of the team. While the disappointment of missing AFCON weighs heavily on Ghana's football legacy, Shardow’s comments remind the nation that progress often takes time and requires patience. He remains hopeful that the team’s performance during the qualifiers will serve as a foundation for future improvement, urging all Ghanaians to continue supporting the Black Stars as they work toward regaining their position as one of Africa’s footballing giants.
