Laryea Kingston Advocates Patience with Otto Addo Despite AFCON Setback
Former Black Starlets coach Laryea Kingston has stepped forward in defense of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, urging Ghanaians to remain patient despite the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Under Addo’s leadership, the Black Stars ended their AFCON qualifying campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola and a 2-1 loss to Niger, leaving them at the bottom of Group F with just three points and no victories. The poor results have sparked widespread criticism and calls for the 47-year-old coach’s removal.
In an interview with Flashscore, Kingston expressed concern over the potential instability that could result from a coaching change. He described such a move as a “disaster” and advocated for giving Addo the chance to lead the team through the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “At the moment, we shouldn’t change anything,” he stated. Kingston believes that Addo is likely reflecting on the team’s shortcomings and devising ways to improve. Highlighting the challenges of high-level coaching, Kingston stressed that stability within the technical team is crucial for long-term success.
Ghana is currently tied at the top of their World Cup qualifying group, with six matches remaining in the campaign. Kingston argued that dismissing Addo now could derail the team’s progress and that he should be allowed to complete the qualifiers before any decisions are made. “Who knows? Maybe he can qualify,” Kingston suggested, adding that the nation should reevaluate Addo’s role based on the final results. Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is scheduled to meet soon to assess the Black Stars’ performance and determine the coach’s future. Kingston’s call for patience comes as a significant counterpoint to the growing demand for immediate change.
