Election 2024: We’ll petition Asantehene over alleged rigging plot by NPP – NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its intention to petition the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over an alleged plot to rig the 2024 general elections by members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC’s claim comes after what they describe as disturbing reports suggesting an organized effort to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the NPP.
In a statement released by the party, the NDC accuses the NPP of attempting to manipulate the outcome of the elections through various illicit means, including voter intimidation and the use of state resources. The party has also alleged that certain influential figures, including some within the Ashanti Region, are collaborating with the NPP to ensure electoral fraud. The NDC asserts that these efforts pose a serious threat to the integrity of the democratic process.
“We will not sit idly by while the future of our democracy is compromised,” the NDC stated. “As a party committed to free and fair elections, we are taking every possible step to ensure that the rights of the people are protected. We will petition the Asantehene to investigate these claims and ensure that justice prevails.”
The NDC’s call for the Asantehene’s intervention underscores the significant role the traditional leader plays in the political and social affairs of the Ashanti Region, where the NPP has traditionally enjoyed strong support. The petition is seen as an attempt to highlight concerns about election transparency in the region and to seek a neutral authority’s involvement in safeguarding the integrity of the process.
The NPP, however, has rejected the allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. The party insists that it is committed to a peaceful and transparent election and has called for unity and cooperation ahead of the 2024 polls. As the election approaches, tensions are rising, and the claims from the NDC are fueling further political discourse across the country.
