Catholic Bishops Conference calls for strengthening of state institutions ahead of elections
The Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference (GCBC) has called for the strengthening of state institutions in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. In a statement issued following their recent meeting, the bishops expressed concern over the potential threats to the country’s democratic processes and called on all stakeholders to work together to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections.
The GCBC emphasized the importance of strengthening the Electoral Commission (EC), security agencies, and other key institutions that play a vital role in maintaining order and fairness during the election period. "It is essential that we have robust, impartial institutions that can manage the electoral process and resolve disputes in a transparent manner," the statement read. The bishops also urged political parties to refrain from using inflammatory rhetoric and violence, as they warned that such actions could undermine the peaceful atmosphere needed for a successful election.
The bishops specifically pointed to the need for the EC to maintain its independence and credibility, stating that the commission must remain impartial and transparent in all its dealings. They also noted the importance of training election officers and ensuring that all voting materials are provided well in advance to prevent any logistical issues on election day.
In addition to strengthening institutions, the GCBC called for greater national unity and the active participation of citizens in the electoral process. The bishops stressed that every Ghanaian has a responsibility to contribute to ensuring that the country’s democracy remains intact. They also urged the government to address social and economic issues that could exacerbate tensions during the election season.
As the 2024 elections draw nearer, the GCBC’s call for institutional integrity and peaceful engagement serves as a reminder to all Ghanaians of the importance of upholding the values of democracy and good governance.
