In Ghana, Africa, and across the globe, the mere mention of "Lionel Messi", the following attributes and accolades rush to mind; Football (Soccer) Genius; Barcelona FC Legend, Seven-time Ballon d'Or Winner, Goal-scoring Machine (772+ goals), Exceptional Dribbling Skills, Visionary Playmaker, Iconic Number 10, One of the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) etc.
Again in Ghana, prior to the 2016 general elections, whenever we hear the name Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, Ghanaians could remember accolades like "Economic Messiah, Economic Whizkid, Economic Wizard, Economic Messi and many more.
Dr. Bawumia, who was then the running mate for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,, was highly regarded prior to the 2016 general election for his exceptional economic expertise. Many Ghanaians referred to him as one of the world’s best economists, who would rescue Ghana from the then economic stagnation.
Dr. Bawumia during the ‘heat’ of the the 2016 campaigns, was noted for:
-His Public Lectures:-
1. He conducted series of public lectures where he questioned and critiqued the Economic Management Team of the Mahama administration, showcasing his economic prowess.
2. Economic Management Expertise: His expertise in economic management was highly sought after, and he was expected to bring about positive change to Ghana's economy.
These accolades among many others positioned Dr. Bawumia as a strong candidate for the vice presidency in 2016, with many Ghanaians trusting his ability to drive economic growth and development.
In fact prior to the 2016 elections, Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia, was really painted as a game changer, a play maker…Ghana\’s “Economic Messi”; and that earned him the great respect of many Ghanaians. No wonder his party’s (New Patriotic Party -NPP) flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won the 2016 Presidential election overwhelmingly.
Currently in Ghana; eight years along the line, situations seams very different, and looks like “things fall apart”.
Before becoming Vice President Ghanaians were drawn to Bawumia’s promises of economic brilliance. His lectures and theories raised hopes for a brighter future. However, once in power, all these promises quickly unravelled.
Instead of reducing costs, Bawumia led Economic Management Team’s policies has rather led to higher expenses, high cost of living and general suffering of Ghanaians.
The cedi continues to depreciate, nearing 17 cedis to the dollar, which has led to a significant reduction in trade volumes and the destruction of capital.
The man who was once hailed as an economic genius, has turned out to be a catastrophic failure. His promises were not just unfulfilled; they appear to be “deceptive lies” to win power.
Shockingly, this same “failed Economic Messiah” and so on, is now campaigning in the 2024 election to become President of Ghana, a prospect that defies logic and could further harm the nation.
All hope is not lost.…Ghanaians still have the chance to correct the situations come December 7, 2024. The truth has now been revealed within these 8 years of the Nana Addo-Bawimia led NPP government.
At least we now know, the once touted “Ghana’s Economic Messi”, is actually an “Economic Ball Boy”.
