Ghana Revenue Authority's Customs Division has intercepted a 40-foot container at Tema Port, arriving from the United States with the container number MEDU4496951. Authorities discovered a shocking stash of 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live ammunition rounds cleverly concealed in suitcases.
The shipment, which had been falsely declared as containing vehicles and personal effects, was intercepted on November 4, 2024, following thorough investigations by the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units.
Commissioner of Customs, Brig Gen Zibrim Ayorrogo confirmed the development and stated, that the arrests have been made, and investigations are still ongoing to uncover the full details of the shipment and its intended recipients.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo use the opportunity to warned the general public, that anyone who imports ammunition must obtain license from the ministry of Interior; and that, without the requisite license or permit the person commits a crime and will be made to face the full extent of the law.
The agent and consignees arrested in connection with the seized 40-foot container at Tema Port have been granted bail.
The Customs Division has assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and preventing the illegal importation of arms and other contraband.
In Ghana, the importation of ammunition is regulated by the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, which was established by Act 736 of 2007.
This law aims to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.
