We Don’t Belong to Any Side in the Election – IGP Assures Public
In a decisive statement aimed at dispelling any doubts about the neutrality of the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reaffirmed the Service’s unwavering commitment to impartiality as the nation gears up for the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, the IGP emphasized that the Police Service does not take sides in political matters, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement. “We are here to serve Ghana, not any political party or individual. Our sole mandate is to ensure peace, security, and the rule of law,” he stated.
The assurance comes amidst heightened political tensions and growing scrutiny of the role of security agencies during elections. Dr. Dampare acknowledged these concerns but urged Ghanaians to remain confident in the Service’s professionalism. “The Ghana Police Service is committed to upholding democracy and creating an environment where all citizens feel safe to exercise their constitutional rights,” he added.
The IGP also outlined the measures being implemented to ensure a peaceful electoral process. These include intensified training for officers on election security, enhanced collaboration with other security agencies, and robust intelligence-gathering mechanisms to preempt and address potential disturbances.
He further cautioned political actors against attempts to influence the Service, warning that any officer found compromising their neutrality would face strict disciplinary action. “We will not tolerate any form of interference. The integrity of the Ghana Police Service is non-negotiable,” Dr. Dampare affirmed.
Ghanaians have been urged to collaborate with the Police by reporting any incidents of electoral malpractice or violence. The IGP assured the public of swift and impartial action against offenders, irrespective of their political affiliations.
As the nation approaches the 2024 elections, this declaration from the IGP is expected to reassure citizens and stakeholders of the Police Service’s dedication to safeguarding democracy. It also reinforces the critical role of law enforcement in fostering peaceful and credible elections.
Dr. Dampare concluded his address with a call for unity and peaceful coexistence, stating, “Elections should never divide us. Let us all work together to ensure Ghana remains a beacon of peace and democracy.”
