The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Disciplinary Committee has announced the postponement of the scheduled hearing for former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo. The hearing, initially set for Monday, April 7, 2025, has been delayed due to what the committee described as "emerging scheduling adjustments and internal considerations."
Original Hearing and Underlying Allegations
The initial hearing was prompted by allegations that Adwoa Safo had violated a party directive prohibiting members from discussing matters that could create disaffection within the NPP in the media. A letter dated March 24, 2025, had formally summoned her to appear before the Disciplinary Committee to address these concerns.
Official Postponement and Future Scheduling
However, a subsequent letter, issued on Sunday, April 6, 2025, confirmed the postponement. The Disciplinary Committee assured that a new date and time for the hearing would be determined and communicated to Adwoa Safo promptly. "I bring you warm greetings from the national secretariat of the party. Further to our earlier correspondence dated March 24, 2025, with reference number NPP/HQ/GS/2025/24/03/DC, inviting you to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on Monday, April 7, 2025, we wish to notify you that the said hearing has formally been postponed," the letter stated.
The committee also took the opportunity to express appreciation for Adwoa Safo's cooperation and reiterated the NPP's commitment to upholding principles of fairness, due process, and procedural integrity throughout its proceedings.
Referral to the Disciplinary Committee
Adwoa Safo's referral to the NPP's Disciplinary Committee stemmed from comments she made on the Pulse Show of Joy News on March 20, 2025. The party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, issued a statement on March 20, 2025, asserting that her remarks were a "clear contravention" of directives issued to all NPP members to refrain from discussing party matters that could cause unrest or disaffection in the media.
Party's Stance and Alleged Constitutional Breach
The statement emphasized that Adwoa Safo, as a former Member of Parliament, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister of State, was expected to set an example of discipline, loyalty, and unity. The party argued that her actions undermined its efforts to rebuild and move forward, and were in breach of Article 3(5) of the NPP's constitution, which mandates members to promote and defend the party's good name.
"As she is aware, the directive explicitly states that all party members must cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism and disaffection in the media and other related platforms. Her actions are not only in disregard of this directive but also undermines the Party’s efforts to rebuild and move forward," Frimpong stated.
The referral to the Disciplinary Committee, as outlined by the General Secretary, signifies the party's determination to address what it perceives as a breach of internal regulations and a potential threat to party unity. The postponement of the hearing, however, suggests that the committee is taking its time to address the matter with careful consideration.
