The 2023 Road Safety Report released by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has revealed a significant 14% decline in road crash fatalities in Ghana’s capital. This achievement is attributed to intensified road safety interventions and collaborative efforts among key stakeholders, including law enforcement, policymakers, and non-governmental organizations.

Progress Through Collective Action

Dr. Raphael Awuah, Regional Technical Advisor for Vital Strategies, commended the progress while urging continuous efforts to sustain and improve these gains. According to Dr. Awuah, the reduction reflects a shift toward safer transportation policies, improved road infrastructure, and increased public awareness of road safety.

He emphasized that "this achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished through coordinated efforts between government institutions, private stakeholders, and the community. However, the fight against road crashes is far from over."

Key Factors Behind the Decline

The report highlights several critical measures that have contributed to the decrease in fatalities:

1. Increased Public Awareness Campaigns: Road safety education targeting pedestrians, drivers, and motorcyclists has significantly reduced risky behaviors on the roads. Campaigns addressing drunk driving, speeding, and the use of seatbelts have been particularly effective.

2. Improved Enforcement: Enhanced traffic law enforcement by the Ghana Police Service has played a vital role in curbing traffic violations. The deployment of speed cameras and routine vehicle inspections has discouraged unsafe driving practices.

3. Better Road Infrastructure: Investment in safer road designs, pedestrian walkways, and traffic lights has contributed to creating a safer environment for all road users.

4. Partnerships with NGOs and Advocacy Groups**: Organizations such as Vital Strategies have been instrumental in supporting data collection, training programs, and policy implementation to address road safety challenges.

Remaining Challenges

Despite these positive trends, the AMA report notes that road crashes remain a leading cause of injury and death in Accra, particularly among vulnerable groups like pedestrians and motorcyclists. The report calls for sustained efforts to address:

- Inconsistent road maintenance and poorly marked intersections.

- Limited access to emergency medical services for crash victims.

- Increased motorbike-related accidents, which account for a growing proportion of fatalities.

Dr. Awuah stressed the need for continued investment in road safety initiatives. "While the reduction in fatalities is encouraging, we must not become complacent. A single life lost is one too many," he stated.

 Call to Action

The AMA and its partners are calling for greater public participation and accountability in road safety efforts. Dr. Awuah urged citizens to adopt safer practices, such as obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions while driving, and using designated pedestrian crossings.

The AMA also plans to enhance collaboration with transport unions and private sector stakeholders to develop innovative solutions for road safety. Initiatives like the introduction of intelligent traffic systems and expanded public transportation options are being explored to further reduce road fatalities.

 A Vision for the Future

The decline in road crash deaths in Accra is a step toward achieving Ghana's broader goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities by 50% by 2030, in line with the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety.

By building on the successes of 2023, authorities hope to create a safer, more sustainable urban environment where residents can move freely without fear of road accidents.

This report serves as a reminder that while progress has been made, the journey to safer roads requires persistent effort, innovation, and collaboration from all sectors of society.
