Election 2024: IGP Vows to Prevent Election-Related Violence
As Ghana approaches the crucial 2024 general elections, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured Ghanaians of the police service's commitment to ensuring peaceful and violence-free elections. In a press briefing held in Accra, Dr. Dampare reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s readiness to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls.
Dr. Dampare emphasized that safeguarding the electoral process is a top priority for the service. “We will deploy all necessary resources to prevent any form of violence that could undermine the democratic process. Our officers are well-trained, equipped, and motivated to ensure the safety and security of voters, candidates, and electoral officials,” he stated.
The IGP outlined a multi-faceted strategy, including enhanced intelligence gathering, early detection of potential threats, and proactive engagement with political parties, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Electoral Commission to address security concerns in high-risk areas.
Recognizing the potential for political tensions, Dr. Dampare appealed to political parties and their supporters to exercise restraint and adhere to the principles of peaceful campaigning. “Elections are about the expression of the will of the people. Let us allow democracy to thrive by respecting the laws and processes that govern our elections,” he said.
Additionally, the IGP warned that the police service would not tolerate acts of intimidation, vote-buying, or the use of vigilante groups to disrupt the electoral process. He reaffirmed the commitment to impartiality, stating, “The police serve all Ghanaians equally. We will remain neutral and professional in discharging our duties.”
