Sam George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, recently made strong accusations against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a live broadcast on TV3’s New Day. Sam George did not hold back, labeling Bawumia as a “dishonest liar” for his claims regarding the Ghana Card. Bawumia had previously asserted that the Ghana Card would be recognized as an electronic passport in 197 countries and would be accepted at approximately 44,000 airports worldwide by the year 2022.
During the televised discussion, Sam George pointed out the stark reality: "You cannot use a Ghana Card to travel from Accra to Togo." This statement was part of his broader assertion that Bawumia is engaging in deceptive practices. He emphasized, “When I tell you that Bawumia is a scammer, he is a scammer, a con artist. They can sit here and accuse me of insulting him, but the facts are clear.”
Adding to his critique, Sam George reflected on the past political narrative, recalling how former President John Mahama was often labeled as incompetent. He noted the irony in how those who once criticized Mahama now react defensively when faced with similar criticisms directed at them. “When they said Mahama was incompetent and labeled him with all sorts of names, they claimed it was a description. Yet, when I describe them in the same light regarding their actions, they cry foul,” he remarked.
In a further examination of Bawumia’s background, Sam George contested the widely held belief that former President John Agyekum Kufuor was responsible for bringing Bawumia into the Bank of Ghana. According to him, it was actually Dr. Kwabena Duffour who played a pivotal role in Bawumia’s career. “Let me clarify something: it is not true that President Kufuor brought Bawumia to the Bank of Ghana. Bawumia was appointed as a research assistant in the research department by Dr. Duffour, not President Kufuor,” he explained, providing context to Bawumia's early professional journey.
Moreover, Sam George delved into Bawumia's academic credentials, revealing that his PhD thesis focused on the economic transformation of Ghana’s economy under former President Jerry John Rawlings. This detail was presented to highlight Bawumia's academic background and its relevance to the current political discourse.
Through his comments, Sam George not only challenged the integrity of Bawumia’s statements but also sought to reshape the narrative around Bawumia’s political and professional history. His remarks reflect a deep frustration with the current political landscape and a desire for accountability among political leaders in Ghana.
