As we inch closer to December 7, 2024election , the stakes are getting higher; and the verbal sparring between the two opposing parties is heating up. It's been a barrage of verbal attacks and counter-attacks for a while now, each Presidential candidate trying to outmaneuver the other.
The election is shaping up to be a nail-biter, with 24 hour Economic and Digitization dominating the discourse.
The two leading candidate, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have all made their messages clear.
Dr. Bawumia's campaign message centers around his vision for a prosperous, dignified, and safe Ghana. He aims to achieve this through various initiatives, including:
1. Investing in Human Capital Development: Building systems that support the growth and development of Ghana's citizens.
2. Embracing the 4th Industrial Revolution: Leveraging technology to drive economic growth and position Ghana as a leader in digital innovation.
3. Diversifying the Economy: Creating sustainable jobs and reducing dependence on a single economic sector.
4. New Tax System: Introducing a simple, citizen-friendly flat tax regime to broaden the tax base and increase revenue.
He emphasizes the need for a mindset shift, from one of impossibility to possibility, and believes that Ghana can achieve greatness through hard work, integrity, and compassion. His campaign slogan, "It is Possible," reflects this vision.
On the other side, NDC’s John Mahama's campaign message for the 2024 election is centered around the theme; "Change to Reset Ghana". He emphasizes the need for a transformative shift in governance, job creation, social services, and envisioning the country's future.
Mahama’s Key Promises Includes:
1. Job Creation: Mahama pledges to create one million new and decent jobs over four years.
2. Free Primary Health Care: He promises free primary healthcare services for all Ghanaians.
3. Digital Economy: Mahama aims to develop Ghana's digital economy, providing universal and affordable internet access, and training one million coders.
4. Economic Growth: He emphasizes his track record of delivering economic growth, citing a 14 billion dollar growth during his presidency.
Mahama's campaign focuses on restoring hope, dignity, and truth, and positioning Ghana for progress and prosperity. Would you like to know more about his policies or campaign?
The controversies and mockeries began when John Mahama; speaking at mini rally at Adjei Kojo in the Tema West constituency, pledges to support startups in poultry, and other small businesses; emphasizing his initiative aims to address the rising unemployment rate in Ghana by providing critical support to small business ventures.
As part of his plan, John Mahama pledged to offer incentives such as day-old chicks (Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti) for poultry farmers. In Akan language, day-old chicks are referred to as “Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti” or Nkokɔ Mba”.
This promises by Mahama was the beginning of the scepticism and mockery; and also the “Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti song” being sang by the governing NPP till today.
Mahama; whiles speaking in Akan language, used the term “Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti”, when he was pledging to offer as day-old chicks to poultry farmers with the aimed of solving unemployment in the country…why would anyone misinterpret the term, or take it out of context, and used it to misinform voters?
Normally, politicians misinterpret good policies and take them out of context to mislead voters, due to biases and preconceived notions; and also to gain political advantage in elections.
By manipulating information, politicians can create fear and anxiety among voters, making them more likely to support their own agenda. This tactic exploits voters' emotions, leading to misguided decisions.
Also, politicians selectively present information to create a narrative that benefits them. They might focus on a single aspect of an opponent's policy, ignoring the broader context and potential benefits.
