The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has destroyed all defective presidential and parliamentary ballot papers printed for the Volta and Ahafo Regions ahead of the December 2024 elections.
The destruction, carried out on Thursday, November 21, was conducted under the supervision of political party representatives, independent observers, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and the Police Service. This action follows the EC’s identification of incorrect serial numbers on the ballot papers, which necessitated their reprinting.
Earlier, on Sunday, November 16, the EC burned all scrap materials, excess papers, and plates used in printing the defective ballots. Speaking on the issue, Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, explained that the destruction of defective ballots was essential to preserve the integrity of the electoral process.
“We have ensured the complete destruction of defective ballot papers. This guarantees that only accurately printed ballots will be used in the upcoming elections,” Mr. Tetteh stated.
The EC reassured the public that the newly printed ballot papers, some of which have already been dispatched to regional offices, would meet the highest standards of accuracy and integrity. Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chair of Operations, emphasized that the exercise was impartial and intended to ensure a credible electoral process.
“This process was not designed to favor or disadvantage any political party. Representatives from all parties were present to oversee and confirm the thoroughness of the exercise,” Mr. Tettey added.
A total of 184 bags of defective presidential ballot papers and 66 bags of parliamentary ballots for the Volta Region were destroyed. Similarly, 67 bags of presidential ballots and 21 bags of parliamentary ballots for the Ahafo Region were incinerated.
To ensure transparency, all parties involved signed a certificate of destruction, with copies provided to the political representatives. Observers at the event confirmed the figures and verified the process.
This decisive action underscores the EC’s commitment to conducting transparent and fair elections. By addressing defects promptly and engaging relevant stakeholders, the EC aims to foster public confidence in the electoral system.
As preparations for the December 2024 elections intensify, the EC has assured citizens of its dedication to upholding the credibility and integrity of the democratic process.
