Real Madrid’s ambitions to refresh their squad for the 2025/26 season have hit a snag as they reportedly back away from pursuing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 26-year-old defender, whose current contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season, was viewed as a key target for Los Blancos to reinforce their right-back position. However, the club is now exploring alternative options.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: A Missed Opportunity?

Alexander-Arnold’s future has been a topic of speculation, with renewal talks ongoing at Liverpool. Reports suggest he is torn between committing to a five-year extension at Anfield or seeking a new challenge abroad. Real Madrid had hoped to capitalize on this uncertainty by signing the England international on a free transfer. Despite their initial optimism, the club is now reassessing its options, as Alexander-Arnold remains undecided and appears increasingly likely to remain on Merseyside.

Pedro Porro: Plan B Option

Among the alternatives being considered, Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro has emerged as a potential candidate. The Spanish right-back has impressed during his time in North London, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and dynamic defender. However, a move for Porro could prove equally challenging for Real Madrid.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, known for his tough negotiation stance, is expected to demand a substantial transfer fee. With Porro contracted to Spurs until 2028, Levy has little incentive to sell and could set a price tag of at least £60 million ($75 million). This valuation has reportedly discouraged Real Madrid, who are unwilling to meet such a high demand.

Levy’s History with Real Madrid

Levy’s dealings with Real Madrid in the past have been notoriously difficult. The Tottenham chairman previously secured record-breaking fees for Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, both of whom moved to the Santiago Bernabéu. Given this history, Real Madrid is wary of entering into prolonged negotiations for Porro, knowing that Levy could make the process arduous.

Manchester City in the Race?

Manchester City has now emerged as a potential suitor for Porro, given their ongoing search for defensive reinforcements. However, a move within the Premier League could further complicate matters. Levy would likely increase his asking price significantly for a direct rival, making any deal with City equally complex.

Real Madrid’s Challenges Ahead

Real Madrid’s plans for the upcoming season are part of a broader strategy to rebuild their squad amid growing competition domestically and in Europe. Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s position is reportedly under scrutiny, with rumors linking former midfielder Xabi Alonso to a potential return as head coach. These uncertainties, combined with challenges in securing top transfer targets, suggest a critical period ahead for the Spanish giants.

While Alexander-Arnold’s indecision and Porro’s high price tag have forced Real Madrid to reconsider their plans, the club’s pursuit of fresh talent remains ongoing. With significant decisions looming for both management and player acquisitions, the 2025/26 season could mark a pivotal chapter in the club’s storied history.
