The Man Who Slept Through a Miracle 💤
(From Acts 20:7-12)
We all know that one person who just can’t stay awake during a long lecture or meeting. Well, meet Eutychus, the guy who dozed off in the middle of a sermon—and took a very literal fall from grace.
The Apostle Paul was in Troas, giving what would be one of his final sermons before leaving the city. Naturally, he had a lot to say, so his sermon stretched well into the night. The setting? A packed upper room, dimly lit by oil lamps, creating the perfect atmosphere for... drowsiness.
Enter Eutychus, a young man sitting by the window. As Paul kept preaching (and preaching), Eutychus started to nod off. Eventually, he fell into a deep sleep, lost his balance, and plummeted three stories to the ground.
The fall was so severe that everyone assumed Eutychus was dead. Imagine the gasps and panic as the congregation rushed downstairs! But Paul, staying cool under pressure, went to Eutychus, embraced him, and said, “Don’t be alarmed; he’s alive!” Miraculously, the young man was restored, and they all went back upstairs to break bread—oh, and Paul kept preaching until dawn.
Eutychus, now fully awake, probably made sure to sit far from any windows the next time.
This story isn’t just about a miracle; it’s also a gentle nudge about priorities and attentiveness. Eutychus represents how easy it is to let fatigue or distractions pull us away from important moments. Thankfully, even when we “fall,” God’s grace is there to lift us back up—literally and spiritually.
Life will have its late-night sermons—times when it’s hard to stay focused or engaged. But even when you stumble, God’s power can restore you. Oh, and maybe avoid sitting by open windows during long talks.
If Eutychus were around today, this would go viral as “The Ultimate Snooze Fail” on TikTok. And Paul? He’d be that relentless professor everyone jokes about: “Bro, the guy fell out a window, and you STILL didn’t wrap up the sermon?” 😅
So, the next time you feel sleepy in church, remember Eutychus—and maybe have some coffee handy.
