2024 Election: Heads of Security Agencies Meet with Political Parties
Ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, heads of security agencies convened a high-level meeting with representatives of major political parties to ensure peaceful and credible polls. The meeting, held at the National Security Ministry in Accra, emphasized the importance of collaboration, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in maintaining national stability during the election period.
In attendance were the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the National Security Coordinator, Edward Asomani, the Chief of Defense Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, and representatives from the Electoral Commission. Political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and others, were also represented.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Dampare assured stakeholders of the Ghana Police Service’s readiness to deploy adequate personnel and logistics to safeguard the elections. "We are committed to upholding peace and fairness. Our officers will act impartially to protect all citizens and ensure that the democratic process proceeds without interference," he stated.
The National Security Coordinator highlighted the risks of electoral violence and urged political parties to engage in issue-based campaigns. "The success of this election is not only a security matter but also a collective responsibility. We call on political leaders to rein in their supporters and avoid provocative rhetoric," he added.
Representatives from the political parties welcomed the initiative, with the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, calling for enhanced communication channels between political parties and security agencies. Similarly, the NDC’s Johnson Asiedu Nketiah stressed the need for neutrality from security personnel and fairness from the Electoral Commission.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a joint resolution committing all parties to peaceful conduct. Regular engagements between security agencies and political stakeholders are expected as the election approaches.
Ghana's 2024 elections are seen as a critical test for its democratic institutions, and the proactive measures taken by security agencies aim to bolster public confidence in the process.
