Soldiers Allegedly Engage in Land Guard Activities at Danfa
Reports have emerged alleging the involvement of soldiers in land guard activities in Danfa, a community in the Greater Accra Region. Residents claim that uniformed personnel have been sighted providing protection for landowners and their agents amidst ongoing land disputes in the area.
Danfa, like many peri-urban communities, has become a hotspot for land disputes due to its rapid urbanization and rising property values. Land guards, often hired to enforce ownership claims, have been a persistent problem. However, allegations that soldiers are involved in such activities have caused alarm among residents and stakeholders.
Eyewitnesses report that soldiers, armed and in uniform, have been seen escorting landowners and their workers to disputed lands. According to some residents, their presence is intended to intimidate rival claimants and ensure construction activities proceed uninterrupted. “We are surprised to see soldiers taking sides in land matters. We thought they were here to protect everyone, not just one group,” lamented a community member who wished to remain anonymous.
The allegations have sparked outrage among local leaders and human rights advocates, who believe the involvement of security personnel in land disputes undermines public trust in the military. “It is unacceptable for soldiers to be used for private purposes, especially in such contentious matters. The military’s neutrality and professionalism must be upheld,” said a legal practitioner familiar with the situation.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been called upon to investigate the matter. A spokesperson for the GAF stated that they take such allegations seriously and would not tolerate any personnel engaging in activities that tarnish the institution's image. “Our men are deployed to protect citizens and ensure peace, not to act as private enforcers. We will thoroughly investigate and take the necessary actions if these claims are substantiated,” the spokesperson assured.
This incident has reignited calls for stronger regulation of the land sector in Ghana. Stakeholders have urged the government to address the underlying causes of land disputes, including the lack of proper documentation, encroachments, and weak enforcement of land laws.
Residents of Danfa continue to appeal for calm as they await action from the authorities. They hope that swift intervention will not only resolve the immediate concerns but also restore faith in the country’s security apparatus.
