Most of us today have little or no knowledge about braces and what it thus in our lives. But they are the most customary dental treatment to straighten teeth, improve the bite, and enhance the overall appearance of a smile. Though they may look simple, they are tools that help entrancing science behind how braces work. The key lies in the action of orthodontics—the study of jaw and teeth alignment.

There are several components of the braces, which are wires, brackets, and elastic bands. The wire put constant pressure on the teeth, slowly moving them into a better position over time. The brackets are those small squares that are made together for each tooth with a special dental adhesive. They are fixed by a wire, which runs through them and is held in place with tiny rubber bands. The elastic bands are often used in different colours and they help to guide the teeth into the desired position.

The hidden truth behind braces is the way they operate on the bones in your jaw. The teeth are inserted in bone, and through the constant coercion from the wire, the bone around the tooth slowly remodels. Because force has been applied, the bone on one side of the tooth breaks down for new bone to form on the opposite side, allowing the tooth to shift into its correct position.

Putting on braces for a very long time is necessary because the method takes time for the bone to adjust to the force. The treatment for this process can last for one to three years if the case is a complex one.

It is very important for those who are wearing braces to always visit the orthodontist to make sure that the braces are effectively directing the teeth. Sometimes adjustments are made to the wires and bands to increase or decrease force, depending on the progress.
