President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan railway line, Ghana’s first standard gauge railway. This $447 million project, financed through a credit facility from India-Exim Bank, represents a milestone in modernizing the country's transport infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at Tema Harbour on November 22, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the transformative potential of the railway line. He described it as a critical component of Ghana’s first multimodal transport system, which integrates rail, road, and inland water transport to connect Tema Port with Buipe Port via the Volta Lake.

“This historic achievement symbolizes the bold strides we’re making to modernize transport infrastructure and drive economic growth,” the President stated.

Benefits of the Railway Line

The railway line is expected to address pressing challenges in Ghana’s transportation sector, such as road congestion, infrastructure deterioration, and high road accident rates. By providing a reliable alternative for long-distance freight and passenger movement, the project will ease pressure on the road network while reducing transportation costs.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the railway's role in boosting economic activity by improving the transportation of bulk goods, agricultural produce, and containers. This will enhance business competitiveness, facilitate port operations, and extend the lifespan of key roads, especially along the eastern corridor.

“This railway line will lower transportation costs and improve agricultural trade, making Ghana more competitive in regional markets,” he added.

A Vision for Expansion

The Tema-Mpakadan project is part of Ghana’s revised 2020 Railway Master Plan, which envisions an expanded national railway network to unlock the country’s economic potential. President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his administration's commitment to building on this foundation through sustained investment and partnerships.

“Guided by our Railway Master Plan, we will continue to expand Ghana’s railway network, paving the way for an efficient, interconnected, and prosperous future,” the President said.

Community and Stakeholder Involvement

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of local communities and stakeholders during the project's development. He urged collective responsibility in maintaining the railway as a national asset, emphasizing its potential to empower communities, invigorate businesses, and strengthen industries.

“I extend my gratitude to the chiefs and people affected by this project. Your cooperation has been invaluable. Let us protect this infrastructure for generations to come,” he noted.

The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line is a vital step toward achieving an integrated transport system in Ghana, promising significant social and economic benefits for years to come.
