Lionel Messi has expressed his deep connection to Barcelona, revealing that both he and his family harbor a strong desire to one day return to their former home. Despite his emotional attachment to the city and its football club, Messi recently announced that he would not be able to attend Barcelona's 125th anniversary celebrations. The invitation, extended to him by the club, was ultimately declined due to his pre-existing commitments, which make it impossible for him to travel to Spain on November 29.

Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami in the MLS, reflected on his time in Barcelona during an interview with 3cat. He shared that although he and his family had to leave the city and Catalonia, their hearts remain with the club and the place they once called home. Messi’s children, who are Catalan by birth, continue to feel a strong bond to Barcelona, and he himself spent a significant portion of his life in the city, both personally and professionally. The Argentine icon admitted that the decision to leave Barcelona was not easy, and while he is living a new chapter in Miami, the family still feels an emotional longing for their old life in Catalonia.

He went on to say that the thought of returning to Barcelona, whether for a permanent stay or just to live in the city again, is something they dream of. This sentiment is not just Messi's, but also shared by his wife and children, who miss the life they had in the city. The Messi family left behind more than just a home; they left a way of life that, despite their new adventures, continues to hold sentimental value.

This emotional revelation comes at a time when Messi’s tenure in the MLS has been bittersweet. His team, Inter Miami, faced disappointment when they were knocked out of the MLS playoffs in the first round by Atlanta United, losing 3-2. While Messi’s individual performance has often been stellar, the defeat was a major setback for the team, and it has left Messi and his teammates nursing their wounds. Despite this, Messi remains focused on his career, with the next major international event on his calendar being Argentina’s upcoming match against Uruguay in March.

The idea of a return to Barcelona has been a topic of speculation in the media, especially since Messi left the club in 2021 due to financial issues that prevented the club from renewing his contract. While there has been talk about a potential return, the financial instability at Barcelona continues to be a major obstacle. The club's current financial difficulties make it uncertain whether they would be able to afford the terms of such a deal, even if Messi were open to rejoining them.

In his comments, Messi acknowledged the deep connection he feels to the club, which has shaped much of his life and career. His statement that he "belongs in Barcelona" speaks to a sense of identity tied not just to the football club, but to the community, lifestyle, and experiences that Barcelona offered him during his long and successful spell at the club.

For now, however, Messi will focus on his current commitments, both with Inter Miami and the Argentina national team, while the possibility of returning to Barcelona remains a distant dream. Whether or not a move back to Camp Nou is financially viable or logistically possible remains uncertain, but Messi’s words indicate that his connection to Barcelona will never truly fade, no matter where his career takes him in the future.
