Thousands of Muslims from Walewale and nearby communities gathered on Friday to join Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, for Jummah prayers and the commissioning of a new central mosque in the town.

The new Walewale Central Mosque, a state-of-the-art facility built with modern features, replaces the old mosque that had served the community for decades. This significant development marks a historic moment for the town, as worshippers offered their first congregational prayers in the new space.

The commissioning ceremony was a grand event attended by imams, traditional leaders, and a diverse crowd of worshippers. Dr. Bawumia and key community leaders officially opened the mosque with a symbolic ribbon-cutting and inspection of the premises before joining the congregation for prayers.

The mosque, built to accommodate Walewale's growing population, includes separate worship spaces for men and women, an ablution area, and offices for the imams. Despite its impressive capacity, the number of attendees exceeded expectations, leaving many worshippers to pray outside.

A Gift of Faith and Community Support

Special prayers were offered for Dr. Bawumia, acknowledging his instrumental role in initiating and funding the mosque's construction. Many worshippers also prayed for his success in next month’s presidential election, citing his contributions to both the Muslim and broader Ghanaian communities.

Over the years, Dr. Bawumia has earned admiration for his consistent support of Zongo and Muslim communities across Ghana. His initiatives have included constructing and renovating mosques, schools, and other community facilities. Notably, he has also extended similar efforts to Christian communities by funding chapels and supporting educational projects.

The Vice President’s gesture reflects his commitment to fostering unity and development among diverse religious and cultural groups in Ghana.

A Landmark for Walewale

The completion of the new mosque is a milestone for Walewale, which boasts a significant Muslim population. The structure not only provides a place of worship but also symbolizes community growth and cohesion. For many residents, the new facility is a source of pride and hope for further progress in the area.

Dr. Bawumia’s contributions go beyond infrastructure. His initiatives often focus on strengthening interfaith harmony and addressing pressing community needs. The opening of the mosque demonstrates his dedication to supporting communities through tangible and impactful actions.

As the congregation departed after the Jummah prayers, the sense of gratitude and excitement was palpable. The new mosque is set to serve generations of worshippers, standing as a testament to the collective aspirations and faith of the people of Walewale.
