Former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston has thrown his support behind Otto Addo, advocating for the coach to be given more time to lead the Black Stars in their pursuit of a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. Despite Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Kingston believes continuity in leadership could be crucial for success.

The Black Stars’ failure to secure even a single win in their AFCON qualifying campaign resulted in them finishing at the bottom of their group, marking the first time in 20 years they will miss the tournament. This outcome has led to widespread calls for Otto Addo to step down. However, Kingston argues that making a coaching change at this stage could be counterproductive.

Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston emphasized the importance of stability:
“If we change the coach and the technical team now, it could create more problems. Otto Addo should be given the chance to complete the World Cup qualifiers. Who knows? He might turn things around and qualify us. After that, we can make informed decisions about the coaching staff and the team’s future direction.”

Ghana currently sits second in Group I of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and remains in contention to secure their fifth appearance at the global tournament. The team’s performance in the qualifiers has offered glimpses of promise, with fans hoping they can build momentum to reclaim their stature on the international stage.

Kingston also highlighted Otto Addo’s experience and potential as a critical factor. Addo, a former talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, has been praised for his ability to nurture young talent and his deep understanding of modern football tactics. Kingston believes these attributes make him the right person to guide the Black Stars through this transitional phase.

While criticism of Addo's leadership is valid, the former international cautioned against making rushed decisions that could disrupt progress. “Every coach needs time to instill their philosophy and overcome challenges. Otto has the knowledge and experience, and with the right support, he can deliver results,” Kingston noted.

The 2026 World Cup qualifiers present a fresh opportunity for the Black Stars to redeem themselves and restore confidence among their passionate supporters. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team navigates the remaining fixtures under Addo’s stewardship.

For now, Laryea Kingston’s call for patience underscores the broader debate over the value of stability versus change in football management a question Ghana must answer as it charts its path forward.
