In a landmark event, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially welcomed 524 members of the African Diaspora as Ghanaian citizens. This historic ceremony, held under the “Beyond the Return” initiative, reflects Ghana’s ongoing commitment to reconnecting with its global African community and fostering unity through shared heritage.
“Beyond the Return,” launched in 2019, commemorates 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were forcibly taken to the Americas. Building on its predecessor, the “Year of Return,” the initiative seeks to deepen cultural, social, and economic ties between Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the significance of this milestone, describing it as a step toward strengthening bonds and ensuring a collective effort for national progress. “Unity, tolerance, and shared goals are critical for Ghana’s development,” the President remarked. He encouraged the newly sworn-in citizens to leverage their experiences and expertise to contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth.
The President’s vision aligns with a promise he made in Washington, D.C., in 2018, where he called for closer ties between Africa and its diasporan communities. By granting citizenship to these individuals, Ghana reaffirms its dedication to fostering inclusion and celebrating its diverse African heritage.
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey, congratulated the new citizens and reminded them of the importance of upholding Ghana’s laws and values. He emphasized their role in nation-building and the responsibilities that come with citizenship.
