Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently voiced her dissatisfaction with the current government's handling of education infrastructure. Speaking during a campaign event in Kpetinga, located in the Gushiegu Constituency of the Northern Region, she accused the government of passing off renovated and repainted schools as brand-new institutions. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang argued that such gestures are deceptive, as a mere facelift does not equate to meaningful development in the education sector. She emphasized that during her time in office under the Mahama administration, schools were fully completed with proper resources—libraries filled with books, computer labs equipped with technology, classrooms furnished, and qualified teachers in place—before being inaugurated. In her view, the current government’s approach to infrastructure falls short of these standards, offering only surface-level improvements instead of comprehensive educational readiness.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also criticized the lack of transparency regarding the current administration’s achievements in education over its eight-year period. She pointed out that it is not enough to take credit for a few renovated school buildings initially constructed by the Mahama administration. Instead, she called on the government to provide a detailed report of the new schools it has fully built and properly equipped during its tenure. According to her, many of the education sector's successes have been taken for granted by the ruling party, which she believes has neglected the real needs of Ghanaian students and schools. Highlighting past interventions, she recalled how the previous government provided free sandals and textbooks to support education, a move she feels was undervalued by critics who, in her opinion, were out of touch with the challenges faced by many Ghanaian families.

Urging voters to back the NDC in the December 7 general elections, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made a case for a return to Mahama’s leadership, stressing that it would be a step toward fixing the challenges she believes have plagued the nation’s education sector under the current administration. She argued that a vote for Mahama would not only restore integrity in handling educational matters but also address broader issues facing the country. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang appealed to the electorate to consider the NDC's track record of thorough and transparent governance when it comes to infrastructure, promising that a Mahama presidency would bring about necessary reforms and a renewed focus on quality education. In her campaign, she highlighted the NDC’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind, contrasting it with what she perceives as the incumbent government's disregard for those who have yet to overcome educational disparities.
